KLOG Monday Sports

Jason Day won his first major, taking the PGA with a record 20-under total. Brooke Henderson, 17, won the Cambia Portland Classic on the LPGA tour. Hannah O’Sullivan won the U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Portland Golf Club…..The Mariners blew a 7-0 lead, then beat the Red Sox 10-8 in 12 innings. Franklin Gutierrez hit two homers, Robinson Cano had five hits and Nelson Cruz hit his 36th homer. The M’s play the Rangers in Texas today, KLOG 4:00 pm…..Denver beat Seattle 22-20 in NFL Pre-Season action Friday. WR Chris Matthews suffered a shoulder injury and backup QB Tavaris Jackson sprained his ankle…..The local high school football teams gather this week as preparation and practice begins for the 2015 season. The first games are on September 4th.

The 2015 Seahawks take the field tonight as they open NFL Pre-Season action with a 7 pm home game against the Denver Broncos…..Vernon Adams passed his math test at EWU, setting up his transfer to Oregon where he will compete for the Ducks QB job…..The Mariners return to action today as they take on the Red Sox in Boston, KLOG 3:00 pm…..Kelso’s Trevor May gets the start for the Twins tonight against Cleveland…..The LPGA Portland Classic continues through Sunday at Columbia-Edgewater. Meanwhile the U.S. Women’s Amateur also runs through Sunday at the Portland Golf Club…..The Mark Morris volleyball team has a fund-raising car wash Saturday from 10-3 pm at Jiffy Lube on 15th Avenue.

Hisashi Iwakuma pitched the 5th no-hitter in Mariners history as Seattle beat Baltimore 3-0 yesterday. Iwakuma joins Hideo Nomo as the only Japanese-born pitchers to throw no-hitters. The M’s are off today before a series at Boston…..The Seahawks practice was moved indoors yesterday due to lightning in the Renton area. The Hawks open the pre-season at home tomorrow against the Denver Broncos…..The Trail Blazers schedule was released yesterday. LaMarcus Aldridge of the Spurs makes his return November 11th…..In women’s pro soccer, FC Kansas City beat the Portland Thorns 3-0 and the Seattle Reign clinched a playoff spot with a 2-1 win over Houston…..Would-be Oregon QB Vernon Adams needs to pass a math test today to be cleared to join the Ducks.

Austin Jackson hit a bases loaded single in the 10th inning to give the Mariners a 6-5 win over Baltimore. The M’s bullpen gave up two homers in the 8th to allow the Orioles to tie it, but Jackson had the big hit to give the M’s the win. The teams meet in a day game today, KLOG 11:30 am…..There were two minor scuffles at Seahawks practice yesterday, indicating the team is ready to play some outside competition. The Hawks get that chance on Friday when they take on the Denver Broncos in the first pre-season game…..The Portland Thorns are in Kansas City for a NWSL soccer showdown tonight. The teams are tied for the final playoff spot. The Seattle Reign hosts the Houston Dash at Memorial Stadium tonight. The Reign can clinch a playoff spot with a win.

Baltimore edged Seattle 3-2 last night. Nelson Cruz extended his hitting streak to 20 games, but his streak of nine straight games with an extra base hit was snapped. The M’s and O’s play again tonight, KLOG 6:00 pm…..The second week of Seahawks training camp began yesterday with Kam Chancellor continuing his holdout……The Arena Football League lost two teams when Las Vegas and New Orleans folded. That means the Portland Thunder are suddenly in the playoffs. The Thunder will play the San Jose Sabercats on Friday…..Samantha Wagner and Jennifer Hahn both shot 4-under 68’s yesterday in the U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Portland Golf Club. The top 64 after today’s second round of stroke play advance to match play.

Nelson Cruz hit his 33rd homer and Felix Hernandez earned his 14th win as the Mariners beat Texas 4-2 yesterday. The M’s host the Baltimore Orioles tonight, KLOG 6:00 pm…..The Cowlitz Black Bears closed out the season with a 10-0 win at Kitsap yesterday. Chris Castellanos pitched eight innings of one-hit ball. The Bears season ends at 22 wins and 33 losses…..The L.A. Galaxy beat the Seattle Sounders 3-1 yesterday. In women’s soccer, the Portland Thorns defeated Chicago 2-0…..The Oregon Ducks were dealt a blow as running back Thomas Tyner will miss the season due to recent shoulder surgery…..J.R Todd won the Top Fuel and Tommy Johnson Jr. the Funny Car at the NHRA Northwest Nationals drag racing event in Kent yesterday.

The Mariners return to action tonight hosting the Texas Rangers, KLOG 6:00 pm. The M’s will induct Jamie Moyer into the teams Hall of Fame prior to tomorrow night’s game…..Bellingham defeated Cowlitz 11-8 in the Black Bears final home game of the season. LCC’s Lorin Archibald drove in his 31st run of the season, a new Black Bear record. The Bears close out the season with three games at Kitsap…..Gonzaga and Washington were set to renew the men’s basketball rivalry in the 2016-2017 season, but the series will resume quicker than expected. The Battle 4 Atlantis tournament announced this morning that the Huskies and Zags will play in the first round Wednesday November 25th in the Bahamas. The Zags and Dawgs have not played since December of 2006.

The Rockies get an 11th inning walk-off, two-run homer from Michael McKenry to beat the Mariners 7-5 yesterday. Fernando Rodney blew the save in the 9th. Franklin Gutierrez hit a two-run homer. Nelson Cruz had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, but failed to homer in a sixth straight game. The M’s are off today…..Bellingham beat Cowlitz 6-3 in West Coast League action. The Black Bears final home game is tonight, a 6:35 pm start time at Story Field…..Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor remains a holdout at training camp. Earl Thomas was activated from the physically unable to perform list as he comes back from injury…..The 68th Ladies Lower Columbia golf tournament is underway, a two-day event at the Longview Country Club.

Nelson Cruz hit a homer for the fifth straight game leading the Mariners over the Rockies 10-4 last night. Cruz extended his hitting streak to 15 games. The M’s and Rockies play a day game today, KLOG 11:00 am…..Chris Castellanos pitched seven solid innings leading the Cowlitz Black Bears to a 3-1 victory over the Bellingham Bells. Just two more home games for the Bears including tonight against Bellingham at 6:35 pm…..The Portland Thorns host the Boston Breakers in women’s pro soccer tonight at Providence Park…..Scappoose native Will Olson, 40, died in what Enduro World Series mountain bike organizers called a freak accident last weekend in Crested Butte, Colorado. Olson, who moved from Scappoose 19 years ago, crashed near the finish line last Saturday.

The Mariners held on for an 8-7 win over the Colorado Rockies last night. Felix Hernandez got the win and Nelson Cruz hit his 30th homer. The M’s and Rockies play again tonight, KLOG 4:30 pm…..The Cowlitz Black Bears open the final home series of the season tonight as the Bellingham Bells come to Longview for three games. The game at Story Field begins at 6:35 pm…..Kam Chancellor continues his holdout as he missed Seahawks practice yesterday. The safety is looking to get more money on a restructured contract. The Hawks continue training camp today…..It’s long been a popular way for local kids to get introduced to golf. The Mint Valley Junior City tournament begins today and runs four days.
