KLOG Wednesday Sports

The American League beat the NL 4-2 in the MLB All-Star Game last night. It’s the 4th straight win for the AL. Robinson Cano walked in his only plate appearance. The M’s host Houston Friday…..The Cowlitz Black Bears host the Perth Heat from Australia tonight, 6:35 pm at Story Field…..Hilander Dental split a Senior Legion DH yesterday dropping the opener 2-0 and rallying to win the nightcap 5-4…..The Babe Ruth 13-year-old State tournament is underway in Kelso. Kelso plays KWRL at 10 am, Longview and Richland meet at 4 pm and Kelso plays Twin Cities at 7 pm. The tournament at Rister Stadium continues through Sunday…..Tonight in MLS, the Portland Timbers hosts Montreal at 7:30 pm and the Seattle Sounders are at home against DC United at 6:30 pm.

Robinson Cano ran into the homer buzz saw that is Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins. Stanton beat Cano 24-7 in the first round of the MLB Home Run Derby. Stanton hit 61 homers in the three rounds to win the event…..Cano will be on the roster of the AL for tonight’s All-Star Game, KLOG 4:00 pm…..The West Coast League All-Star Game will be next Tuesday at Story Field. Black Bears coach Grady Tweit will coach the South team that includes Parker McFadden, Kenyon Yovan and Weston Hatten of Cowlitz. Last night Andy Armstrong hit a solo homer in the 8th to give Cowlitz a 2-1 win over Kelowna. The Bears take today off before hosting the Perth Heat of Australia tomorrow…..In Senior Legion today, Hilander Dental hosts Grays Harbor in a 4 pm DH at Mark Morris HS.

Robinson Cano hit his 21st homer to lead the Mariners to an 8-5 win over the Royals on Sunday. Cano will take part in tonight’s MLB All-Star Home Run Derby, KLOG 5:00 pm…..Kelowna scored a run in the top of the 11th inning to beat Cowlitz 3-2 last night in WCL action. The teams will play again tonight at 6:35 pm. Following the game, Zach Threlfall of Kelso HS won a home run derby to earn a spot in the WCL Derby next week…..The Kennewick Outlaws beat Hilander Dental 10-7 at the Brandy Pugh tournament yesterday. HD went 0-5 in the tourney…..Kelso beat Camas 8-5 to win the Babe Ruth District 14 tourney yesterday. Kelso goes to State in Kennewick this week. The KWRL team beat Longview 10-5 in the 13 title game. Both teams will go to State this week, hosted by Kelso.

Katie Reichert of Kelso competed in the women’s javelin at the USA Olympic Trials in Eugene yesterday. Reichert’s top throw was 169’ 3”, not quite enough to advance to the top-12 finals…..Kansas City scored two runs in the 8th and two in the 9th to shock the Mariners 4-3 last night. The M’s have dropped four straight heading into tonight’s game, KLOG 4:00 pm…..The Black Bears and Victoria were rained out last night. The teams will attempt a 6:35 pm double header tonight…..Hilander Dental mustered just one-hit in a 3-0 loss to Baden at the Brandy Pugh Legion tournament in Bellevue. HD plays at 11 am today…..Longview Babe Ruth hosts the 13 and 14 District tourney this weekend at Roy Morse. Longview Youth hosts the Cal Ripken 11 and 12 State at Roy Morse Park.

Kelso’s Katie Reichert competes in the javelin at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene. The event begins at 6:30 pm…..The Astros completed a sweep of Seattle with a 9-8 victory last night. The M’s take a nine game road losing streak to Kansas City today, KLOG 4:00 pm…..Victoria scored nine straight runs to beat Cowlitz 9-3 in the WCL. The Black Bears and HarbourCats play again tonight in a 6:35 pm game at Story Field…..Hilander Dental swept Thurston County 4-1 and 8-4 in Senior Legion action. Hilander plays at 2 pm in the Brandy Pugh tourney in Bellevue today…..John Null Park in Longview will be hosting the Cal Ripken 11 and 12-year-old State tournaments beginning today. Longview hosts the Babe Ruth 13 & 14-year-old District tournaments Saturday at Sunday at Roy Morse Park.

Robinson Cano is the lone Seattle All-Star…..Cowlitz rallied with two runs in the 8th to win 2-1 at Bellingham last night. The Black Bears begin an eight game home stand with a 6:35 pm game against Victoria tonight at Story Field…..The Hilander Dental Senior Legion team hosts Thurston in a 5 pm DH today at Rister Stadium in Kelso…..In Junior Legion, Nipp’s Burgers beat Centralia 13-9 and lost the nightcap 1-0…..The Blazers are nearing a cash deal with Orlando to acquire guard Shabazz Napier. Gerald Henderson leaves Portland for a two-year, $18 million deal with Philadelphia.

The Blazers are still looking for a big man after Pau Gasol agrees to join the Spurs…..Houston edged Seattle 2-1 in MLB action yesterday. The M’s four game win streak was snapped. The teams play again today, KLOG 4:00 pm…..The Bellingham Bells beat the Cowlitz Black Bears 7-1 last night up in Whatcom County. The finale of the three-game set is tonight at 7:05 pm. The Bears return for an eight game home stand starting tomorrow night against Victoria…..In Junior Legion ball yesterday, Olympia edged Nipp’s Burgers 1-0. Nipp’s will take on Centralia today at 3 pm at the Mark Morris HS field……The Timbers and Colorado battled to a 0-0 tie yesterday in MLS action.

The Mariners snapped the Orioles seven game win streak with a 5-3 victory last night. Taijuan Walker got the victory and Seth Smith hit a two-run homer. The M’s and O’s play again tonight, KLOG 6:00 pm…..Morgan McCullough’s RBI fielder choice in the 12th inning gave the Cowlitz Black Bears a 5-4 win over the Wenatchee AppleSox. The teams play again tonight in a 6:35 pm game at Story Field…..Hilander Dental dropped two games at the Cowboy Classic in Twin Falls, Idaho. Meridian won 5-4 and Twin Falls also won 5-4. Hilander play Treasure Valley at 5 pm today…..The Trail Blazers met with free agent forward Chandler Parsons last night in Los Angeles. Portland is reportedly offering a four-year max deal. Parsons played for Dallas last season.

The Pirates beat the Mariners 8-1 last night. Seattle begins a four game home series with the red hot Baltimore Orioles tonight, KLOG 6:00 pm. The O’s have won seven in-a-row…..Morgan McCullough’s RBI single in the bottom of the 9th gave the Cowlitz Black Bears a 5-4 win over the Portland Stars. The Bears host the Wenatchee AppleSox tonight at 6:35 pm…..Treasure Valley beat Hilander Dental 9-2 in Senior Legion action in Ontario, Oregon last night. Hilander plays two games today at the Cowboy Classic in Twin Falls, Idaho…..Nipp’s Burgers swept two games from Tenino, 5-1 and 13-3, in Junior Legion action yesterday…..The Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0 in US Open Cup play last night. The Galaxy take on the Sounders in the next round.

Nelson Cruz hit his 20th homer and Hisashi Iwakuma got the win as the Mariners beat the Pirates 5-2 last night. The teams close out the two game set tonight, KLOG 6:00 pm…..The Cowlitz Black Bears shutout the Portland Lobos 5-0 in a non-league game last night. Jordan Jones got the win with five innings of two-hit, shutout ball. The Bears host another non-league team, the Portland Stars tonight at 6:35 pm…..Montesano scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to edge Nipp’s Burgers 6-5 last night in Junior Legion. Nipp’s hosts Tenino in 5:30 pm action at Mark Morris HS today…..Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin has agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $46 million, $24 million guaranteed. Baldwin is now locked up through the 2020 season.
