There’s still no word on the cause of a fire that did about $1,000 damage to a vacant home in the 500 block of Oregon Way, a fire that took place yesterday morning around 8 am. A neighbor called 911 after she saw smoke and heard a “popping” noise. Longview Fire crews responded, and got the fire put out in just a few minutes. A building search showed that the home had been used by transients, with signs of recent occupation. They say that the evidence shows that this was a “human-caused” fire, but they couldn’t tell if it was accidental or intentional. Firefighters say that they had to work quickly, to prevent the fire from extending into the surrounding vegetation, and possibly threatening a neighboring house. They say this is a good example of the need to keep shrubs and trees trimmed, to prevent fire from spreading in a situation like this.

Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue reports that the incident took place around 3:30 Friday afternoon, near County Line Park. The victim was with another man, who was fishing from the bank. The 79 year-old lost his balance and flipped his kayak, and couldn’t get back in. It’s estimated that he spent about 20 minutes in the water before two other kayakers were able to get to the man and bring him back into shore. By the time emergency crews arrived on the scene, the man was out of the water, safe and sound. It’s also noted that he had been wearing a life vest, which helped him to survive the incident. The latest statistics show that in 84 percent of drowning deaths in the United States, the victim was NOT wearing a life vest.
